The Neuroscience Major requires you to complete a minimum of 24 weeks of lab rotations in at least three different labs. This includes the Working in Bioscience module, where you can do a lab rotation in industry for instance. Finding lab rotations can be done by contacting the PI’s of the IZN-associated research groups. On Moodle you can find a more detailed list with specific projects (only accessible for current students).

The Neuroscience Major additionally requires the completion of at least 4 seminars in Neuroscience prior to the start of the master’s thesis. Possible seminars include, among others:

  • Calcium-signalling in learning, survival and death
  • Transgene Methoden und Tiermodelle neurodegenerativer Erkrankungen (will be in English when foreign students are present)
  • Molekulare und genetische Grundlagen neuro-psychiatrischer Erkrankungen (will be in English when foreign students are present)
  • Regenerative approaches for spinal cord injury
  • Standard Methods in Neuroscience
  • Molecular Mechanisms of Neuronal Functions in Health and Disease
  • From Cajal to Kandel
  • Reward and Addiction
  • Calcium signals in learning, survival, and death
  • A complete list can be found in HeiCo.

Semester 3 (winter)

Table

In this semester you should complete your remaining lab rotations. It is also the perfect time for doing a traineeship abroad. See Moodle for more details (only accessible for current students), also with respect to financial aid.

If you are interested in doing a traineeship in the industry, this semester is also best suited to do that. You can declare the credits obtained during this traineeship in the ‘Working in Bioscience’-module.

Semester 4 (summer)

Table

The Master's thesis work lasts 6 months. You undertake a laboratory research project from within the neurosciences, write a thesis, and defend it in an oral presentation.
